Regarding putting Hermes' rat on a plate at the end; for the first three years of his life his previous owner fed him by throwing live mice/rats into his cage with him, covering the cage with a blanket, and leaving them alone overnight. As the prey got bigger, so did the wounds they inflicted. By his third year, right before he came into my care, live adult rats were taking massive bites out of his back, and also had chewed off several inches of his tail. He hadn't eaten in months when I got him, had fresh wounds, and was terrified of frozen/thawed rats I held in front of him with tongs. To this day, two years later, he will only eat them off of a plate, and even then he takes several hours to approach the already dead rats.
